Kerbside Waste & Recycling Collection

Kerbside Recycling Collection

In 2021/22, Council implemented a fortnightly kerbside recycling collection for residents in the townships of Cummins, Coffin Bay, Boston, Tiatukia, Tulka, Poonindie, North Shields and Louth Bay. Due to the success of this program, further minor townships were surveyed with a view to expanding the service, however only the township of Edilillie responded in favour of joining the program and is now included in the kerbside recycling service fortnightly.

To find out what to put in your new bin, and when recycling collection will occur near you, check the information brochures below:

FAQs

Q: Where is the recycling waste going?

A:  The recycling will be processed to Port Lincoln for transport to Adelaide.  Recycling will not go to landfill in the Eyre Peninsula.

Q: Can I choose not to recycle?

A: Yes, you can elect not to put your yellow bin out, however the cost is included as a compulsory service charge in your rates. The more recycling becomes the normal standard, the cheaper it becomes and the less we add to landfill (which is great for the environment).

Q: Why are my bins collected on different days? (Boston and Tulka residents)

A: For most towns, recycling pickup is on the same day as the general waste pick up. Some towns (Tulka and parts of Boston) have different collection days for their red and yellow bins. Council has focused heavily on ensuring that kerbside recycling as cost efficient as possible, which has resulted in these different pick up days.

Q: When is my yellow bin being picked up?

A: The kerbside recycling is a fortnightly pickup with the pickup day depending on what town you are in. Refer to the  brochures for a schedule relating to where you live.

What can I put in my recycling bin?

  • Paper: office paper, magazines, newspapers and junk mail
  • Cardboard
  • Green, clear and brown glass bottles and jars (rinsed)
  • Juice and milk cartons (rinsed)
  • All hard plastic bottles and containers marked (rinsed)
  • Steel (tin) and aluminium cans and empty aerosols

Kerbside Waste Collection

140 litre bins, as provided by Council, are to be left out for collection the night prior to the designated day. The bin is to be placed on the kerbside with handles facing away from the road, and must be clear of any obstacles. Any waste deposited on the footpath in any other manner may be considered as litter and may attract a penalty as such.

Liquids or loose waste likely to cause a litter problem are not to be placed in the bins. Bins are not to be overloaded, the lid of the bin must be closed.

The rubbish contractor will only collect garbage that is contained in the red lid bins, provided by Council. Each bin is registered against a property and bin numbers are used to determine the amount payable under the contract.

Property owners are reminded that waste collection bins assigned to a property have a registered number on the side of each bin. It is a good idea to make a note of this number so in the case of a bin being stolen it can easily be identified and returned to the rightful owner. It is also recommended that you put identifying marks on the bin, this has a twofold action, as a deterrent for would be thieves and also to return property to rightful owners. The property address or Lot number would be appropriate as identifying marks as the bin is allocated to the property and if or when the property is sold the bin goes with the property not the owner. Spot checks will be held by Council inspectors to identify bins at correct addresses and also the use of multiple bins.

Additional bins for any property need to be arranged through the Council and are subject to an additional annual charge to cover the additional cost of collection and disposal. Please refer to the current Fees & Charges Schedule for pricing.
